Lindos History According to Homer Lindos was built by the Dorians in the 12th century B.C. Rhodes sent nine ships to the Trojan War which all came from Lindos. The oldest finds that came to light here was stone from the Neolithic Period (3rd millennium B.C) which proves how far back the history of Lindos stretches. The find known as "The Chronicle of the Temple of Athena" confirms that several of the best known names in Greek history visited the Temple among them included Herakles, Helen of Troy and Menelaus, Artaphernes, King of Persia and Alexander the Great. The ancient theatre of Lindos lies to the right of the harbor several parts of its wedge shaped seats and the orchestra have survived as they were carved into the rock. The rock that provides the base of the Acropolis is almost triangular in shape standing a proud 166m high. The walls of the Acropolis were built by the Knights and once inside the Acropolis there are four levels to explore on the very top (the fourth level) of the ancient Acropolis you will find the reconstructed Temple of Athena. According to ancient Greek mythology the first temple was created by Danaos. The temple whose ruins you see today was built in the middle of the 4th century B.C. Lindos has many places of historical interest one other top recommendation is the Church
